Low Back Pain Associated with Brain Shrinkage

The work of neurscientist, Dr Apkarian, has shown disturbing evidence of brain shrinkage in people suffering chronic low back pain.

An MRI study of 26 subjects with low back pain, and 26 healthy individuals, show that those with low back pain have less gray matter compared to ‘normal’ subjects. The gray matter contains active ‘thinking cells’ involved in processing information and memory. This area is also known to be important in making ‘emotional assessments,’ including decision making and control of everyday social behavior.

The Manga Report stated that “for the management of low back pain, chiropractic care is the most effective treatment and should be fully integrated into the governments health care system.”

It is still too early to know the full extent of the long term effects of the decrease in gray matter seen in chronic low back sufferers but it seems logical to have chiropractic care for the prevention of low back pain and to maintain a healthy nervous system.
