Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation mainly refers to muscles and the supporting soft tissues and ligaments to the skeleton (bone).

To achieve optimal joint stability and control, chiropractors are concerned with ensuring patients have the correct balance, adequate motor control and muscle endurance capacity. Therefore, we are not only interested in reducing your pain, we aim and know it is necessary to improve your overall function. Thus, we want to ensure your musculoskeletal system is working optimally for you.
Musculoskeletal rehabilitation is advised on an individual needs basis, with specific exercises forming part of each of the seven levels in Romford and Ilford Family Chiropractic’s unique approach to chiropractic neurological progression. There are over 160 different exercises available including:

  •  Gentle stretches
  • Gentle Traction
  • Strengthening exercises using the the Pilates machine
  • Theraband (resistance) exercises/stretches with theraband
  • Kettle bell workouts
  • Swiss ball exercises
  • Core stability exercises

Please note it is advisable to receive correct instruction from a qualified trainer before attempting any of the above.
The main aim of undertaking these exercises is to enhance and strengthen your posture, and to increase functional strength and support around the joints that protect your spine. Physical rehabilitation is used on the whole body, from ankles, knees, elbow, shoulder, hips to wrists and above.

The benefits of skeletal rehabilitation training

The benefits of regular exercises on the skeletal system can be dramatic. Bone is a living tissue. It constantly removes old, worn-out cells and creates new cells. Throughout childhood and adolescence, bone grows in density, reaching a peak between the ages of 20 and 30. After that, bone tends to lose more cells than it creates. Over time, the result is a more fragile skeletal system, made up of brittle bones that break more easily. Weight-bearing exercise stimulates the growth of new bone and can slow, prevent and even reverse bone loss.

A strong skeletal system gives you:

  • Injury prevention and rehabilitation
  • Increased protection and ‘bracing’ for your back
  • Stable platform for sports movements

A weak musculoskeletal structure makes you susceptible to bone breakage and arthritis. When you have good musculoskeletal structure, the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen work in harmony. They provide support to your spine and help transmit increased power and performance for just about any activity.

Strong core muscles help minimise the chances of spinal pain and injury. A strong core aids spinal daily performance and aids to reduce and slow down osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, and wear and tear. As Dr. James Chestnut states*, the best medical scientific outcome for chronic (long term >6 weeks) neck and low back pain is with specific adjustments (manipulation) and regular physical rehabilitation. Session times

Weekly or 6-12 week courses are available on Tuesday, Thursday  and Saturday.
