Symptoms and Conditions

It is stated that humans are the sickest species in the world* and in the history of all species. Why? Because of our lifestyle choices.

Modern illness is actually lifestyle illness- our genes have not changed, but our lifestyles have and at an overwhelming rate; our bodies struggle to cope and we turn increasingly to the modern ‘quick health fix’ solutions of prescription drugs and surgery.

But health and wellness is developed from maintaining a natural balance:
EATING WELL (chemical), THINKING WELL (mental) and MOVING WELL (structural).

Negative symptoms and conditions in our health are a result of an imbalance in our chemical/mental/structural make-up. Too much or too little of something can lead to toxic overload or a deficiency. To prevent or recover from illness we must work towards achieveing balance and thus optimal function of every cell in our bodies.

Our goal at Romford & Ilford Family Chiropractic is to help everyone to achieve the balance for best health. Listed below are just some of the conditions we can help with and the non-invasive, drug free treatments we utilise (click on the link to find out more):

Woman suffering with arthritisIf you have arthritis we recommend that you have your spine checked for vertebral misalignments. Vertebral misalignments weaken your nervous system, stress the immune system and put the body in a weakened state. This can set the stage for sicknesses and disease of all kinds – including arthritis. As chiropractors are trained to locate and correct vertebral misalignments, they can help with arthritic symptoms.

For patients who are experiencing pain or stiffness in the hands, paraffin baths (hot wax baths) can have great results. Preventive care is also an important consideration in regards to arthritis; as the disease develops spinal fusion can occur resulting in further loss of mobility and increased pain. At R&I we will thoroughly evaluate your condition and design a treatment program that will hopefully prevent or slow down this process.

xray of a person with backacheBack pain is one of the most common ailments treated by chiropractors. Symptoms can be pain or stiffness, numbness or burning sensations, or all of these. We evaluate your condition by conducting a thorough examination to look for any misalignments of the spine. A misalignment causes irritation to nerves and interrupts the communication between the brain and cells, tissues and organs of the body. Misalignments are corrected by a chiropractor through spinal adjustments plus physical therapy and rehabilitation. The aim of the chiropractor is to make your spine, nerves and muscles healthier, stronger and more stable and thus pain free.

Common Headache

Womain suffering with a headacheHeadaches are common, but can in some cases be severe with the sufferer experiencing excruciating pain and discomfort. Chiropractors have discovered that such headaches can be due to muscular contractions at the back of the head and neck due to spinal degeneration of the cervical spine. Often the solution to the problem is a matter of determining the cause of muscle tightness in your neck. Stress can also cause or exacerbate headaches.

Head and Neck Pain

A stiff neck can sometimes seem to develop from nowhere, but the problem could actually have been developing for sometime. The neck consists of seven small bones collectively known as the cervical spine, and they support the 22 bones of the head. The delicate curvature of these areas must be maintained for normal blood flow and nerve function. It is changes to this curvature over time that cause pain due to trauma such as whiplash, a fall, poor posture, stress, poorly performed exercises or as a result of spinal imbalance. Damaged or irritated nerves can then go on to cause pain in other areas of the body as well as reduced neck motion. Neck problems may also cause headaches, vision difficulties, dizziness, ringing in the ears, decreased attention span, learning and memory impairments, nasal problems and/or tongue and throat problems. Receiving chiropractic care can counter the effect of stress and unnatural wear and tear by relieving your neck of vertebral misalignment, thereby restoring proper movement to the spinal column.

Lower Back Pain

Eight out of ten of us suffer from some kind of lower back pain. Research shows that the cause of such pain in the majority of cases is caused by a misalignment in one or more segments of the lower (lumbar) spine. The spinal column protects the spinal cord and is made up of segments called vertebra, which must be positioned correctly in order to function properly and provide a normal range of motion.

When the lower vertebra is out of alignment the discs (the spine’s shock absorber) can swell or tear causing it to bulge. This bulging can pinch nerves inbetween the vertebra producing pain, numbness, tingling or burning sensations. This condition can be treated through spinal adjustments, physical therapy and rehabilitation, negating the use of pain killers.

Migraine Headache

Millions of people in the UK suffer from migraines and there are many causes. One of the most common is misalignment in the upper spine and straightening of the neck that puts pressure on the nerves and arteries, causing them to swell. With less blood and oxygen reaching the brain, a severe headache can develop. By getting the cervical vertebra adjusted by a chiropractor, pressure on the nerves and arteries is relieved allowing blood and oxygen to flow to the brain. No more migraines, no more toxifying pain killers!

Muscle Spasm

Each of us have over 600 muscles in our bodies that work together to control even the smallest, simplest of movements. Muscles work in conjunction with joints, made up of cartilage and bones, to provide motion. When the spinal vertebra become misaligned and irritated, it disrupts the nerve-muscle relationship and causes a muscle spasm. Muscle pain can also be a symptom of a more serious problem and so should be addressed immediately. If left alone the condition will worsen and the pain can become more debilitating.

Scoliosis has many causes, some due to injury while others are hereditary. It can also be due to an abnormal development of the vertebra in the spine. The most common form of scoliosis is an abnormal pattern of muscle and ligament growth during the teenager years. With early detection chiropractic treatment can correct many causes of scoliosis.

Sports Injury

There is nothing more frustrating for a sports person than an injury and the time away from training and their sport while it heals. Some sports injuries are accidental or due to improper stretching, others are from over-use and over-training. It is important to diagnose and treat injuries quickly to prevent further aggravation or damage to the specific area, whilst also identifying how to avoid future injury. The team at Romford & Ilford Family Chiropractic have extensive training in the area of sports medicine and can diagnose and effectively treat sports related injuries. Spinal adjustments, physical therapy and rehabilitation have proven to be very successful in correcting injuries and getting people back to normal activity quickly.

Sciatica & Leg Pain

Chiropractic care appears to have the most effect on sciatica when problems first occur. But, even for those who have suffered for longer periods and been through the ‘medical mill’, chiropractic can still provide excellent results. Too many people who suffer from low back and sciatic like pain, disc disease or protrusion think the only sources of help are drugs, physiotherapy and painkillers. Not so- contact Romford & Ilford Family Chiropractic for a drug-free solution.

Pinched Nerve

What can cause a nerve to pinch? A fall or an accident, even one that happened years ago, may be enough to misalign your spine and result in pinched nerves. Some common causes are awkward sleeping positions, bad posture, fatigue, dental work, a difficult birth, emotional stress, poor nutrition or a combination of the above. Chiropractors can analyse the spinal column for the vertebral misalignments which cause pinched nerves and correct them. No painkillers, muscle relaxants or other drugs, medial procedures or surgery will resolve a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves (vertebral misalignments) will not go away by themselves. Anyone suffering from pinched nerves needs a chiropractic spinal analysis and spinal adjustment to relieve their body of vertebral misalignments.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

CTS is often caused by pressure on the median nerve just above the wrist. Pressure on the median nerve may occur due to injury or sustained pressure from activities like typing, chopping, athletics, hammering or pushing. Some warning signs are pain, numbness, tingling or burning sensation, weakness or loss of grip strength or loss of sleep due to discomfort. There are many ways to treat CTS depending on individual severity and other personal considerations. In most cases chiropractic treatment to the affected wrist area -and possibly to the spine depending on specific needs- has been proven to be one of the most effective methods of treatment.
